Dribbling Isn’t Enough – Great Tips To Improve Basketball Skills

Dribbling isn’t enough. Don’t get me wrong, dribbling is incredibly important, a must have skill. You need to know how to handle the ball, but there are many other skills and fundamentals that you  need to practice and develop other than just dribbling. Whether you are going to try out for the team or you are just going to ride the bleachers, there’s stuff you need to know about basketball, dribbling, and other things. Basketball is a game anyone can play, and with commitment, play well. Read on for tips you’re going to use, (ranging from passing to core muscle development, when you play), or just watch others use.

Basic Ball Handling

Dribble properly. You want to dribble with the tips of your fingers, not your whole hand. This gives you the best ball control. You should be dribbling the ball at your side instead of in front of your body. The ball should always be dribbled at waist level. Keep your head up and do not look at the ground. If you handle the ball often, you need to learn how to do a crossover. In a crossover, you transfer the basketball from hand to hand. That action has to be done fast to be successful. By having the ability to move either way quickly, you will become a better all-around player.

Focus on Your Strengths

To be a better basketball player you should concentrate on the things that make you great. Your best skills may not be center-stage every game, but knowing how to play the best angles can help you give more to your team. Find you best position and then refine it until you are unbeatable.

Core Muscles

If you have a kid wanting to play basketball in high school, be certain that they are properly training their core muscles. The core muscles include the lower back, hips and abdonimals. The lower and upper extremities are linked by the core, and athletes with a weak core will exhibit limited performance. A strong and solid core allows force that is generated via the legs to be used for helpful movements during the game like higher jumps and faster running.

Passing

You have to know how to bounce pass properly. If done correctly, a well-executed bounce pass will reach the player in a way that allows them to move immediately with the ball. The ideal bounce pass should land about 3/4 of the way between you and the receiver. Of course, there are also other factors involved.

You may have better luck honing your passing skills if you forgo dribbling during practice. It is quite challenging to play the game without dribbling, but it does make sure you and your teammates make accurate passes. Try not to lose yourself in frustration if you do not master it immediately, with the more time that passes with you and your team practicing, the more accurate they will become.

Between the leg passes are usually helpful when another team’s players are riding you hard. Refine this skill by bouncing a ball with force between the legs while stepping backwards or forwards. Mastering this move can help give you an advantage on the court.

Practice passing while looking another way. You can really confuse your opponents this way. If you can pull it off, it’s effective to draw your opponents away from the shooter. That way the shooter gets a great look before shooting. This play can be very powerful.

If you don’t want someone to steal the ball, dribble hard. The harder you dribble, the faster the ball will return to the cup of you hand. If you have an opponent who is guarding you relentlessly, it is time to pass the ball.

Try to get the basketball from one side of the court to the other in about five dribbles. This may seem like an impossible challenge, but it will increase your stride length and your speed. This translates to simple layups, fast breaks or just a general increase in your team’s numbers.

Changing pace can help you keep the offense guessing. As you approach the goal, plant your foot and then straighten up. Your defender will likely think you are taking a shot or passing, and straighten up as well. Once they slow their momentum, you can shoot past them with a burst of speed.

You will become a much better player if you are dedicated and practice regularly. Understand that you will not become a great player in a matter of days. Schedule some time to practice each day. Continue practicing all your skills in soccer, including the hardest ones. You should also practice because there is a chance to improve all of your skills.

Practicing penalty kicks after a vigorous practice can help you increase your chances of capitalizing on these situations. That teaches your brain how to do them correctly. Come up with a few standard kicks for use during penalties, and make sure to practice them until you succeed every time.

If you’re going to become good at soccer, you must keep fit. If you are overweight, the game will become very hard. Therefore, carefully watch your diet, and ensure you are eating healthy foods in the right proportions so that you maintain a healthy weight.

Practice set plays if you want to improve you ability to make decisions. Test out corner kicks and direct shots with other players. By going over these plays regularly, you’ll be able to figure out what works during game play and that’s going to help you to win.

Soccer is a tough sport. Don’t be afraid to make contact with another player. You can get physical without playing dirty. Intentionally kicking someone or slide tackling from behind is dirty, but standing your ground or leaning shoulder to shoulder is not. Don’t be scared of getting physical. And be sure to protect your own legs with the use of soccer pads.

You must be in perfect coordination with your teammates in order to get through those tight defenses. You can confuse the opposing team by quickly passing the ball to your teammates. Focus on the group effort and the result of getting a pass through the tight field. Help out your teammate that’s also trying to do this.

Try perfecting a shot with your weaker foot. A lot of people slow themselves down by passing the soccer ball to the strong foot, and the opposing team gets a chance to take it. The ability to shoot with either foot will make you a much more valuable player on your team.

Ask each player to bring their soccer ball to practice. This ensures that every player can practice with a ball at home. Make sure there’s extra soccer balls at practice, just in case someone does not bring a ball. You may even have players who forget run a little extra.

Warm up ahead of training. Exercises will prepare the muscle by moving the blood to the parts that will be worked during play. Start with light stretching before walking to prepare your muscles for training.

You must learn how to sprint properly to improve your soccer game. Only sprint after you have gone through the proper warm-up. You should practice sprinting by running as quickly as possible for 30 seconds. Then, you should take a 30 second rest. To get the results you want, keep repeating this for roughly 15 minutes each day.

Every soccer player must know how to effectively shoot and pass the soccer ball. These skills can be practiced alone or with your teammates. When practicing solo, kick against a wall. As the soccer ball rebounds, regain control of it and try shooting it at certain areas of the wall.

Keeping the ball under control using precise dribbling is a key skill in soccer. Practice dribble with every step to gain the most control possible. Being able to control the ball can really increase your game on the field. Once you’ve learned how to control, get to learning how to dribble faster.

Passing

Frequently train yourself on your pass catching moves. Practice catching errant throws along with perfect passes. During a real game, many of the passes that come your way will be off-target and tougher to handle. Being able to get imperfect passes will limit turnovers.

To hold the ball right, spread your fingers out. That makes it less likely that you lose control of the ball. Also, keep your palm off the ball. You should only use your fingers to touch the ball when passing or shooting.

Defense

Understanding your opponent is a good way to shut him down on defense. Study video tape on your opponent and read over any scouting reports. See if you can determine each players strong and weak sides. The more you understand what you are up against, the more likely you are to develop an effective strategy during games. The more knowledgeable a defender is, the stronger he is.

If you find yourself unable to shoot well, consider your shoulders. When your shoulders are positioned improperly, you will never make the basket regardless of how good your abilities are. Your shoulders should always be squared towards the hoop. The dominant shoulder must be perfectly aligned with the rim.

One of the most vital attributes one needs to play basketball is quickness. You will have the advantage over your opponents if you can really play fast. Steady drilling will help speed up your play. Though, you should never attempt to a play faster game than your abilities permit. By playing beyond your speed capabilities, you will quickly lose control of the ball, which will lead to bad passes, bad shots, and turnovers.

Always be aware of where you have your feet and what you are going to do with them next. You want to make sure you don’t step over the bounds by even a teeny bit. You will get called for walking if you take extra steps and are not dribbling. In addition, a foul can be called against you if you move either foot while setting a screen, a pick or taking a charge.
